Mahatma Gandhi’s Great-Grandson Appeals to Supreme Court Over Disturbing Incident in Uttar Pradesh School

A deeply unsettling incident from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, has captured national attention. A Muslim child was reportedly beaten by his classmates, allegedly under the directive of a teacher. The gravity of the situation intensified when a video of the incident went viral on social media platforms.

The Supreme Court, in response to the grievance, is slated to hear a petition. Notably, the petitioner is the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. The bench, consisting of Justices Abhay S Oka and Pankaj Mithal, will oversee the proceedings.

The school, situated in the Khubbapur village of the district, has since been sealed in the aftermath of the incident. The teacher at the epicenter of this controversy, Tripta Tyagi, is alleged to have made deeply concerning remarks. She is said to have

“referred to the boy’s faith and spoken pejoratively about Muslim children,”

subsequently urging his peers to

“beat him hard.”

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken swift action in the wake of the event. They have directed the Uttar Pradesh Police to

“lodge a first information report (FIR) against her [Tripta Tyagi].”

The child rights body is also seeking clarity and has

“sought responses from the concerned District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police.”

In a further development, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has proactively taken

“suo motu cognisance of the incident,”

and is in the process of seeking a detailed response from both the State of Uttar Pradesh and the Director General of Police of the state.

This incident, which has sparked widespread condemnation, underscores the pressing concerns surrounding the safety and mental well-being of children within educational institutions. The involvement of Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson in the legal proceedings further emphasizes the profound implications of the event and the collective call for justice.
