Today, On 7th August, The Supreme Court criticised the Maharashtra government for allegedly allocating funds to freebies schemes while neglecting to compensate citizens whose properties were acquired by the government. The court expressed concern over the state’s financial priorities, highlighting the discrepancy between spending on populist measures and fulfilling legal obligations.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court criticized the Maharashtra government on Wednesday, remarking that the state has sufficient funds for distributing freebies but fails to compensate for properties it acquires.

The court specifically mentioned the Eknath Shinde government’s Ladli Behna scheme, which provides financial support to women.

A three-judge bench led by Justice BR Gavai stated ,

“Do not take the court for granted. You cannot treat every order of the Court in a casual manner. You have enough money for the Ladli scheme. All the money on freebies, you should take a little bit to compensate for the loss of land also,”

The Supreme Court also admonished the Maharashtra government for failing to submit an affidavit regarding compensation in a case where the state had acquired an individual’s property.

The bench emphasized that if the affidavit is not submitted before the next hearing, the chief secretary will be required to appear in person.

The case in question involves a petition alleging that the complainant’s land seized by the government and the land provided in exchange was designated as forest land.

Previously, the Supreme Court criticized the state’s actions, stating that they infringed on a private citizen’s property rights. The court highlighted the importance of the state exercising appropriate caution in such matters.
