Supreme Court Rejects Daman & Diu MP’s Rs 33 Crore SIT Probe Plea, Ask to Approach Bombay HC

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court recently turned down a plea by Daman and Diu MP Umeshbhai Babubhai Patel, who had sought a court-monitored SIT investigation into alleged financial irregularities in the renovation and restoration of the Union Territory secretariat building at Moti Daman. The amount in question reportedly runs into Rs 33 crore.

The MP’s Concerns

Patel, through his counsel, claimed that the project involved the misuse of funds under the guise of renovation and restoration. He also stated that he was facing 52 FIRs and challenging an order by the Lokpal, which, according to him, were all linked to his efforts to expose corruption in the Union Territory administration.

“All this is happening because I raised my voice,”

the MP’s lawyer told the court, emphasizing that Patel’s actions were in the public interest.

Supreme Court’s Response

The bench, headed by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai along with Justice K. Vinod Chandran, responded by asking whether the law should treat an MP differently from a common citizen. While acknowledging Patel’s position as an elected representative, the bench directed him to approach the Bombay High Court for his plea.

The Supreme Court assured that the high court would take up the matter expeditiously, possibly within a day after filing.
