The Supreme Court Collegium, led by CJI B.R. Gavai, has recommended the transfer or repatriation of 21 High Court judges. Major reshuffle impacts courts across Telangana, Delhi, Bombay, and more.

On May 26, 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, held a meeting in which it recommended the transfer and repatriation of 21 judges from various High Courts across India. The announcement was officially shared through a statement on the Supreme Court’s website.

the statement read,

“The Supreme Court collegium in its meeting held on May 26, 2025 has recommended transfers/repatriation of the following judges of high courts,”

Among the notable recommendations, Justice Sujoy Paul of the Telangana High Court, whose parent High Court is Madhya Pradesh, has been recommended for transfer to the Calcutta High Court. Justice V. Kameswar Rao, who is currently serving in the Karnataka High Court and belongs to the Delhi High Court originally, is recommended to be sent back (repatriated) to the Delhi High Court.

In another move, Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre of the Bombay High Court is recommended for transfer to the Delhi High Court. Similarly, Justice Suman Shyam of the Gauhati High Court has been proposed to be transferred to the Bombay High Court.

A total of six judges have been recommended for repatriation to their parent High Courts. These include:

Supreme Court Collegium Orders Major Reshuffle, Transfers 21 High Court Judges

These transfers and repatriations are part of the Collegium’s regular exercise to maintain efficiency, reduce backlogs, and ensure balanced distribution of judicial work across the High Courts.

The Collegium decisions play a vital role in the administrative functioning of the judiciary, impacting both judicial capacity and the speed of justice delivery in different states.

This round of transfers comes at a time when the judiciary is actively working to strengthen the functioning of courts and maintain the independence and integrity of the judicial system through transparent and balanced postings.
