At the ceremony, SCAORA Honorary Secretary Nikhil Jain delivered a moving tribute to CJI Khanna. He described him as “a towering figure in the legal landscape” and praised his tenure, which was defined by a deep sense of justice and honesty.

On the eve of his retirement, the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) organised a warm and respectful farewell ceremony for Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, who is set to demit office on May 13, 2025.

The event was graced by Chief Justice-designate B.R. Gavai, who praised Justice Khanna’s outstanding contributions to the judiciary and his impactful leadership.

At the ceremony, SCAORA Honorary Secretary Nikhil Jain delivered a moving tribute to CJI Khanna. He described him as a towering figure in the legal landscape and praised his tenure, which was defined by a deep sense of justice and honesty.

Jain further said that Khanna’s leadership was “a beacon of hope, integrity, and unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability.”

Appreciating the inclusive approach of the outgoing CJI, Jain noted, “He ensured that every voice—no matter how small—was heard, and for championing fundamental rights and the principles of justice.”

Vice President of SCAORA, Amit Sharma, added his sentiments by stating, “CJI Khanna constantly reminded all that the bench is not a throne but a sacred trust.”

SCAORA President Vipin Nair reflected on Justice Khanna’s legacy by drawing a comparison with his late uncle, the legendary Justice H.R. Khanna, often remembered as the best Chief Justice India never had. Vipin Nair remarked that CJI Sanjiv Khanna carried forward that same legacy with distinction.

He said Khanna’s biggest strength was his openness and praised him for making sensitive case documents publicly accessible.”

Looking back at the journey of CJI Khanna, Justice B.R. Gavai called the occasion a moment to celebrate a transformative career.

He said,
“We are here to celebrate the remarkable career of my elder brother, CJI Khanna. From the day he assumed office in November 2024, we witnessed transformative changes marked by transparency and openness. He always upheld the principle that the CJI is the first among equals, not a superior, and welcomed suggestions. He was always candid—if he couldn’t do something, he declined plainly, without worrying about perceptions.”

In his parting speech, CJI Khanna addressed the Advocates-on-Record (AoRs) and encouraged them to be more confident in presenting their own cases. He stressed that being well-versed in the subject and facts was more important than simply being a good speaker.

He advised, “AoRs should argue their own matters more often, instead of always engaging seniors. Domain expertise, coupled with mastery of facts, matters more than just great oratory.”

He also promoted continuous learning and mentoring within the legal community.

He said, “I urge AoRs to pursue higher courses in mediation. Mentorship too is vital—lawyers with 15+ years of experience should mentor juniors. SCAORA can institutionalise this.”

On a personal note, Justice Khanna expressed his openness to continue serving the legal fraternity even after stepping down from the Bench.

He assured the legal community,

“If I open an office in future, my door will always be open for legal advice. It will be my pleasure if you walk in and seek counsel.”

In his closing words, CJI Khanna conveyed his strong belief in the institution of the judiciary.

With a voice full of trust and humility, he said:
“As I demit office, I do so with deep faith in this institution. We pronounce judgments, but it is the advocates who take them forward. Do so with care and sincerity.”
