NEW DELHI: Today, the Supreme Court reserved its judgement on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the NGO ‘Society for Enlightenment and Voluntary Action‘. The PIL alleges a concerning rise in child marriages across India and criticizes the ineffective enforcement of the existing laws meant to curb this practice.
The case was heard by a bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, along with Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. They listened to detailed arguments from the petitioner’s counsel, as well as from Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, who represented the Centre. After considering the arguments, the bench decided to reserve its verdict.
The Centre presented a counter-argument to the NGO’s claims, stating that
“Child marriages have significantly decreased in the country.”
This assertion was made in response to the allegations put forth by the NGO regarding the increasing prevalence of child marriages.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed the Ministry of Women and Child Development to submit a status report on the measures being implemented to enforce the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
This directive was part of the court’s efforts to ensure that the laws intended to prevent child marriages are effectively put into action.
The court’s final judgement on this PIL is now awaited, and it is expected to address the concerns raised by the NGO while considering the government’s stance on the issue.
