Irish Supreme Court Judge Justice Gerard Hogan Visits India’s Supreme Court

Justice Hogan, who has been serving as a judge of the Irish Supreme Court since October 2021, is currently in the visitors’ gallery of the CJI’s courtroom, observing the legal proceedings.

New Delhi, April 2, 2025 – Justice Gerard Hogan, a judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland, visited the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday. He was warmly welcomed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI), Sanjiv Khanna, who introduced him to the lawyers and litigants present in the courtroom.

While introducing Justice Hogan, CJI Sanjiv Khanna highlighted his distinguished career.

“I have the pleasure to announce that a judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland, Justice Gerard Hogan, is with us. Earlier, he was with the Court of Appeals and was also the Advocate General for the European Court of Appeals. He has authored judgments on the Right to life and the safe harbour principles,” the CJI stated.

Justice Hogan, who has been serving as a judge of the Irish Supreme Court since October 2021, is currently in the visitors’ gallery of the CJI’s courtroom, observing the legal proceedings.

During his address, CJI Sanjiv Khanna spoke about the constitutional similarities between India and Ireland. He emphasized their shared connection through the Directive Principles of State Policy. He further mentioned that India has adopted the principle of being declared a Union of States from other jurisdictions.

“He has keen interest in mediation…please welcome him,” the CJI added, acknowledging Justice Hogan’s enthusiasm for alternative dispute resolution methods.

Later in the day, Justice Hogan is scheduled to visit the International Arbitration Centre at the Delhi High Court. His visit signifies a growing interest in international legal exchanges and collaborations, particularly in areas such as mediation and arbitration.

Earlier, Singapore Supreme Court Judge Judith Prakash joined the Constitution bench, that time the bench examining whether the royalties collected by the Centre from mineral rights should be classified as tax, aligning with a precedent set by a seven-judge bench in 1989.

Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading the nine-judge bench, announced Justice Prakash’s participation, referring to her as a guest member.

“A few months back, Singapore Supreme Court Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon was with us. Now, we have Justice Judith Prakash amongst us. She has come here for the Delhi Arbitration Weekend, where she will be delivering the keynote address,”
-the CJI said while welcoming Justice Prakash.

CJ Chandrachud highlighted Justice Prakash’s presence, noting the recent participation of Singapore Supreme Court Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon. He mentioned that Justice Prakash was attending the Delhi Arbitration Weekend, where she would deliver the keynote address.
