CJI Reconstitutes SC Gender Sensitisation Committee; Justice BV Nagarathna Nominated for Chairperson

Today, On 18th September, The Chief Justice of India reconstituted the Supreme Court’s Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) and appointed Justice BV Nagarathna as its chairperson. The GSICC is responsible for addressing complaints of sexual harassment within the court premises and promoting gender sensitisation among staff and lawyers.

New Delhi: The Chief Justice of India restructured the Supreme Court’s Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC), appointing Justice B.V. Nagarathna as the new Chairperson.

The reconstitution follows the retirement of Justice Hima Kohli, the previous Chairperson.

The other appointed members of the committee include,

Justice B.V. Nagarathna, who is known for her strong stance on gender equality and social justice, takes over from Justice Hima Kohli, who previously chaired the committee until her retirement. The transition is seen as part of the Supreme Court’s ongoing commitment to ensuring a gender-sensitive work environment, reflecting the judiciary’s dedication to addressing concerns surrounding harassment and gender discrimination.

The Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) established under the Gender Sensitisation & Sexual Harassment of Women at the Supreme Court of India (Prevention, Prohibition & Redressal) Regulations, 2013. It is tasked with addressing complaints related to gender-based harassment and promoting gender equality within the Supreme Court. The committee not only investigates allegations of harassment but also works to cultivate a culture of inclusivity and respect for all genders within the institution.

The GSICC is responsible for addressing gender-based issues such as discrimination, harassment, and inequality. The reconstitution carried out under Clause 4(2) of the Gender Sensitisation & Sexual Harassment of Women at the Supreme Court of India (Prevention, Prohibition & Redressal) Regulations, 2013.
