NEW DELHI: Today(on 9th August), Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud announced the launch of the second hackathon by the Supreme Court. This hackathon, distinctively centered on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), aims to streamline and enhance the efficiency of the Supreme Court’s Registry. The hackathon, organized as part of the Supreme Court’s 75th-anniversary celebrations, underscores the judiciary’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for improved judicial processes.
At the beginning of the day’s court proceedings, Chief Justice Chandrachud revealed the focus of this hackathon, stating-
“This hackathon will center on utilizing AI to enhance the Registry’s operations, including tasks such as defect removal, formatting, and sorting of petitions. We are fully transitioning to an AI-driven model.”
This innovative approach is designed to tackle common issues such as the “removal of defects (in petitions) and formatting and sorting of the judicial records,” which are critical components of the court’s workflow.
The hackathon is being conducted in collaboration with the Centre’s ‘MyGov’ application, a government initiative aimed at encouraging public participation in governance through digital engagement. Justice Chandrachud invited all individuals with innovative ideas to participate in this unique opportunity, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the event.
“I urge all innovative young minds to participate. The submission deadline is August 31, and assessments will take place on September 14.”
– he announced.
In an encouraging tone, he added-
“I encourage all innovative thinkers to participate. By ‘young minds,’ I do not refer to age but to those with fresh and creative ideas.”
highlighting that the call for participation is open to all, regardless of their age, as long as they possess creativity and innovative thinking.
The term “hackathon” is derived from “hack” and “marathon” and is widely recognized as a “codefest”—a social coding event where computer programmers and others interested in software development collaborate to improve or create new software programs. This hackathon presents an exciting platform for developers, legal tech experts, and AI enthusiasts to contribute to a cause that could potentially transform the way India’s highest court functions.

This hackathon not only celebrates the 75th year of the Supreme Court’s establishment but also symbolizes a forward-looking vision where technology plays a pivotal role in the administration of justice. The outcome of this event could set a precedent for other courts in India and around the world, making it a milestone in the history of judicial reforms.
Participants are encouraged to submit their innovative solutions by the deadline of August 31, with assessments scheduled to be conducted on September 14.
