The Supreme Court has granted bail to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in the disproportionate assets case, noting long custody and completion of investigation. Majithia has been in jail since June 2025 following his arrest by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a high-profile Rs 700-crore disproportionate assets case, giving relief to the senior Punjab politician who has been in jail for several months.
Bikram Singh Majithia, a senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal and a former Punjab cabinet minister, has been lodged in jail since June 25 last year. He was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau from his residence in Amritsar and has remained in judicial custody, mainly at the New Nabha Jail, since then.
On the previous date of hearing, Majithia had approached the Supreme Court seeking interim bail, citing an apprehension of threat to his life while being in custody. The plea was considered along with his regular bail application.
The case relates to allegations that Majithia and his wife accumulated assets far beyond their known sources of income during his tenure as a public representative. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau registered an FIR against him under Sections 13(1)(b) read with Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. These provisions deal with criminal misconduct by a public servant through possession of disproportionate assets.
In August 2025, the Vigilance Bureau filed a massive charge sheet running into nearly 40,000 pages, along with supplementary filings, before the trial court. The investigation was based on a June 7, 2025 report submitted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that was probing an earlier NDPS case against Majithia.
According to the SIT, Majithia and his wife allegedly amassed assets worth more than Rs 540 crore, which were disproportionate to their known sources of income. The SIT claimed that these assets were acquired through a complex network of domestic and foreign entities during the period when Majithia served as an MLA and later as a cabinet minister in Punjab between 2007 and 2017.

Majithia had challenged an earlier order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had dismissed his bail plea in the disproportionate assets case. The Supreme Court examined the entire record, including Majithia’s past cases, the length of custody, and the stage of the investigation.
While granting bail, the Supreme Court passed a detailed order explaining the reasons for its decision. The Court said:
“Considering the facts and circumstances of the case, and in particular the fact that the petitioner was granted bail in the earlier NDPS matter in 2022, against which the SLP filed by the state was dismissed by this court in 2025, and further the petitioner has already been in custody for the last 7 months, and the police report under Section 173(2) has already been filed, further the fact that the disproportionate assets case relates to the check period from 2007-2017, and the FIR has been lodged in 2025 under PC Act, we are inclined to grant bail,”
The Supreme Court also noted that the investigation is already complete, the charge sheet has been filed, and the alleged offences relate to a check period that ended several years ago. The Court found that continued custody was not required at this stage of the proceedings.
With this order, Bikram Singh Majithia will be released from jail subject to bail conditions imposed by the trial court. The case will now proceed to trial, where the allegations made by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau will be tested on evidence.
The ruling is being seen as a significant development in Punjab’s political and legal landscape, as Majithia is one of the most prominent leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal and has consistently denied all allegations, calling the case politically motivated.
