NEW DELHI: The tragic suicide of Bengaluru-based techie Atul Subhash has sparked a wave of controversy, leading to a public interest litigation (PIL) being filed in the Supreme Court.
The petition raises concerns about the alleged misuse of dowry and domestic violence laws against men and calls for comprehensive reforms to ensure these laws are not weaponized.
The PIL, submitted by advocate Vishal Tiwari, advocates for the establishment of a dedicated committee to address the issue.
This committee, as per the petition, should comprise former Supreme Court judges, legal experts, and experienced lawyers.
The objective is to thoroughly review and recommend reforms in the current legal framework surrounding dowry and domestic violence cases to prevent their misuse.
According to the plea, dowry and domestic violence laws were originally designed to safeguard married women from abuse and ensure justice in cases of domestic conflicts.
However, the petition argues that these legal provisions have, in some instances, been turned into
“a weapon in the hands of women to harass husbands and his parents.”
Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old software engineer, tragically ended his life in Bengaluru, leaving behind both a detailed suicide note and a video.
In these, he accused his wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family of subjecting him to relentless harassment. He also alleged that they had filed false cases against him, which ultimately drove him to take the extreme step.
The petition underscores the urgent need for balanced legal provisions that protect the rights of all parties involved. It seeks to address the growing perception that current laws, while aimed at empowering women, might inadvertently lead to undue suffering for men and their families in certain cases.
By initiating a dialogue on this sensitive topic, the PIL aims to create a legal framework that ensures justice is served equitably, preventing further tragedies like that of Atul Subhash.
