NEW DELHI: On August 15, a collective of advocates, legal scholars, and students urged the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court to decide on the bail petitions of individuals accused in the case involving the alleged broader conspiracy behind the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the National Alliance for Justice, Accountability, and Rights (NAJAR) called upon both courts to expedite the bail hearings in the “equal citizenship” cases (FIR 59/2020), requesting that all bail applications be resolved within two weeks.

The FIR concerns the alleged conspiracy behind the riots in Northeast Delhi.

Among the twenty accused are activists Sharjeel Imam, Khalid Saifi, and former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, all charged with allegedly inciting the violence, with the case being probed by the Delhi Police Special Cell.

NAJAR’s statement criticized the delays in hearing the bail pleas and called for appropriate compensation for the accused and their families. It further suggested that, in instances of judicial transfer or elevation, judges should be required to issue rulings in bail cases where hearings have concluded or judgments have been reserved.
