NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court dismissed a plea by convicted politician and criminal Vijay Kumar Shukla, also known as Munna Shukla, who sought additional time to surrender in connection with the 1998 murder of former Bihar minister and RJD leader Brij Bihari Prasad.
A bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Sanjay Kumar, and R Mahadevan heard senior advocate Vikas Singh, representing Shukla, who requested a 30-day extension. The plea was based on Shukla’s need to address “his wife’s health issues” and to manage certain personal affairs before surrendering.
However, the Supreme Court denied the request, stating that its
“October 3 order granted him a sufficient time of 15 days”
-to surrender and therefore, no further leniency would be provided. The bench emphasized that the period given earlier was adequate, and additional time could not be granted.
On October 3, the Supreme Court had convicted Shukla, a former MLA, along with accused Mantu Tiwari, in the high-profile murder case of Brij Bihari Prasad. The court had partially overturned a Patna High Court decision that had acquitted all accused. As a result, Shukla and Tiwari were ordered to surrender within two weeks.
Tiwari, one of the accused, is notably related to the late Bhupendra Nath Dubey, the brother of Devendra Nath Dubey, a political adversary of Brij Bihari Prasad’s widow, Rama Devi.
The apex court, however, upheld the acquittal of five other accused, including former MP Surajbhan Singh, giving them the benefit of the doubt.
While the case has garnered significant attention due to the involvement of high-profile political figures, the court’s refusal to provide further time for Shukla’s surrender underscores its strict approach toward ensuring justice.
The murder of Brij Bihari Prasad, a prominent leader in Bihar’s political landscape, continues to be a reminder of the deep-rooted political rivalries in the region.
