The Kamrup Metropolitan District and Sessions Court rejected bail pleas of three accused in the Zubeen Garg death case. Garg’s wife Garima sought continued custody until trial completion, as SPP Ziaul Kamar confirmed the next hearing is fixed for February 13.

AMINGAON: The Kamrup Metropolitan District and Sessions Court denied bail petitions from three individuals involved in the case surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death.
Garg’s wife, Garima, expressed her hope that bail would not be granted to any of the accused until the case is resolved. The Court has scheduled the next hearing for February 13, according to special public prosecutor (SPP) Ziaul Kamar.
Among the seven individuals arrested, three Garg’s band member Amritprava Mahanta and his two personal security officers (PSOs), Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Bora had submitted applications for bail.
Garima, who attended the hearing, stated that she was relieved by the rejection of their petitions.
She remarked,
“We wish that none of them get bail until the case is closed and all the accused receive their due punishment,”
Mahanta is charged with murder, while the two PSOs face charges of criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust for misappropriating funds entrusted to them. The 52-year-old singer-songwriter died on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore, where he had attended the North East India Festival (NEIF).
After the hearing, Kamar commented,
“Mahanta was fully a part of the conspiracy leading to Garg’s death, and we objected to bail primarily on that ground. The two PSOs did not disclose the money deposited with them by Garg until they were brought into the investigation.”
He added that the court aligned with their arguments and rejected the bail requests, crediting the outcome to collaborative efforts and input from the police department.

Kamar, who leads a team of five special public prosecutors appointed by the state government to handle this case, mentioned that three new petitions were filed by the accused, including one seeking details of a related case in Singapore’s coroner’s court. He also noted that the court has set February 16 for the next hearing regarding another case connected to accused Siddhartha Sharma, Garg’s manager, concerning his business investments and a residential flat in Guwahati.
Two other accused individuals NEIF organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s cousin, suspended police officer Sandeepan initially filed for bail but withdrew their petitions during the previous hearing on January 22.
Shyamkanu faces murder charges, while Sandeepan is accused of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The remaining two individuals, Siddhartha and another band member, Shekharjyoti Goswami, who are also facing murder charges, have yet to file any bail petitions.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the state police’s CID is currently probing the case and submitted its charge sheet on December 12.
Additionally, local authorities in Singapore are conducting a separate inquiry, with a coroner’s court recently ruling out foul play and determining that Garg was heavily intoxicated and drowned off Lazarus Island after declining a life jacket.
Renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg had travelled to Singapore to attend the North East India Festival (NEIF), where he tragically died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea on September 19. His death sparked widespread public outrage and led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter.
