Sexually Harassing MBBS Trainees: Medical College Professor Gets 3 Years In Jail

Maharashtra: A professor from Rajiv Gandhi Medical College, Kalwa, located in Thane, Maharashtra, has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually harassing female MBBS trainees.

The incidents occurred in 2014 when Dr. Saileshwar Natarajan, aged 63, was serving as the head of the surgery department at the medical facility.

Back in 2014, several female students accused Dr. Natarajan of inappropriate behavior. They alleged that he was inappropriately touching them under the guise of demonstrating diagnostic medical procedures.

The students came forward and wrote complaints to the police commissioner, explaining their experiences. Their letters detailed how Dr. Natarajan misused his position of authority to make them uncomfortable during practical demonstrations.

In protest, the students also organized demonstrations on the college campus, seeking justice and action against the professor’s misconduct.

Following these complaints, a case was registered at the Kalwa police station against Dr. Natarajan.

On Thursday, Magistrate Mohini Nanavare, who presided over the case, declared the judgment. The court sentenced the accused professor to three years in jail. Additionally, he was fined Rs 50,000 for his actions.

Public prosecutor Leena Pednekar shared the details of the verdict, ensuring that justice had been served for the survivors of the harassment.

This verdict highlights the importance of addressing workplace harassment, especially in educational institutions, where students place trust in their mentors.

“Sexual harassment has no place in our society, and everyone should feel safe in their learning environment.”

Such incidents emphasize the need for awareness, strict action, and safe reporting mechanisms to prevent the abuse of authority and protect students from harm.
