Sambhal Court Rejects Bail Pleas of 10 More Accused in Shahi Jama Masjid Violence Case

Sambhal (UP): A local court has rejected the bail pleas of 10 more accused in connection with the violence that erupted during a survey at the Shahi Jama Masjid in November 2023. With this, the total number of denied bail applications in the case has now reached 29.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge Nirbhay Narayan Rai denied the 10 bail pleas on Monday, as confirmed by Additional District Government Counsel Hari Om Prakash Saini. The court is set to hear the remaining bail petitions on later dates, officials stated on Tuesday.

Saini informed that crucial video footage and other evidence were presented in court to establish the involvement of the accused.

The court was informed that the violence led to the deaths of four innocent people. The accused allegedly attacked the police with stones and firearms, despite the imposition of prohibitory orders in the area. Some weapons, including bullets, were recovered from their possession,

Saini stated.

Tensions began escalating in Sambhal on November 19, 2023, following a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid. The survey was conducted after claims surfaced that a Harihar temple previously existed at the site.

The situation worsened on November 24, when a second survey was attempted. Protesters clashed with security forces, leading to violence that resulted in the deaths of four people and left several others injured.

So far, 87 bail applications have been filed in connection with the case. Of these:

Defence lawyer Zafar Ali stated that the accused would now approach the high court for bail.

The case remains a major legal battle, with authorities continuing to investigate the violence and its alleged perpetrators. As the hearings progress, the court’s stance on bail applications will be closely watched.
