Courtroom Proceedings
The court session was held in Room 210 on the third floor of the Sealdah court building at 2:30 pm. Judge Anirban Das presided over the proceedings and informed Sanjay of his conviction. The judge stated:
Judge: “The charge against you is that you entered the RG Kar Hospital on the morning of August 9. After wandering around there, you attacked a female doctor. You grabbed her face. You grabbed her throat. She died. You also sexually assaulted her.”
Judge: “In the charge sheet, you have been charged under sections 64, 66, 103(1) of the Indian Penal Code. The charge has been framed under these sections. The witnesses examined and the documents and information brought by the CBI lawyers have proved your guilt. You are hereby convicted.”
Judge: “The way you strangled him to death could result in a life sentence or even the death penalty. I will hear from you and your lawyer on Monday.”
Sanjay, visibly agitated, responded in a loud voice:
Sanjay: “I am being framed. I have a Rudraksha necklace around my neck. Will I commit this crime while wearing this necklace?”
Sanjay: “If I did anything there, my Rudraksha mala would have torn. I am being framed. Sir, do you understand that I am being framed?”
The judge reiterated the evidence presented by the CBI:
Judge: “Based on the examination of all the witnesses and the information provided by the CBI, it appears that you have been found guilty. You will have to be punished. I will tell you what the punishment is on Monday.”

Despite this, Sanjay continued pleading:
Sanjay: “Sir, Sir, you have convicted me. I am poor. I did not do this. Why are those who did it, being released?”
Sanjay’s repeated claims of innocence were met with skepticism as he was forcibly removed from the courtroom.
Reaction of the Victim’s Family
The victim’s grieving parents expressed their gratitude to the court after the verdict was delivered. They told Judge Das:
Victim’s Parents: “You have fully honored the trust we placed in you. I want to thank you.”
The judge assured them that their inputs would be considered during the sentencing hearing scheduled for Monday at 12:30 pm.
Background of the Case
The incident occurred on August 9 at RG Kar Hospital. Sanjay Roy was captured on CCTV entering the hospital premises. According to the footage, he was seen wearing a Bluetooth headphone around his neck when he entered the seminar hall. However, when he exited half an hour later, the headphone was missing. Investigators later recovered a torn headphone from the crime scene.
Sanjay was arrested by the Kolkata Police the next day, and the investigation was subsequently transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI’s charge sheet identified him as the sole accused in the case, citing substantial evidence against him.
Sanjay’s repeated references to his Rudraksha necklace became a focal point during his defense.
He argued that the necklace, which he claimed symbolized his innocence, would have been damaged if he had committed the crime. However, Amartya De, the lawyer for the victim’s family, dismissed this argument:
Amartya De: “The issue of Rudraksha beads was never raised before. It was not seized from the scene or even after the arrest. If it was so important, it should have been mentioned earlier.”
Judge Anirban Das has stated that the maximum punishment for rape can exceed 10 years, while murder can lead to a sentence ranging from 25 years to life imprisonment or even the death penalty. Reflecting on the manner of the crime, the judge remarked:
Judge: “The way Sanjay strangled to death, the maximum sentence he can get is death.”
The final sentencing will be announced on Monday, January 22, 2025. Until then, Sanjay remains in custody, continuing to claim his innocence.
