BREAKING | Rahul Gandhi Granted Bail in BJP Defamation Case

Karnataka: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi granted bail by a special court in Bengaluru today in connection with a defamation case filed by Karnataka’s BJP unit. The case pertains to “defamatory” advertisements published in mainstream newspapers ahead of last year’s Assembly polls, which accused the then BJP government of large-scale corruption during its 2019-2023 tenure.

The court had earlier, on June 1st, granted bail to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also serves as the State Congress chief, after their appearance in the defamation case.

Judge K.N. Shivakumar had mandated that Gandhi appear before the court on June 7th without fail.

Previously, the court had granted bail to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and state Congress president D.K. Shivakumar, who are the first and second accused in the case, respectively. Rahul Gandhi is the fourth accused, following Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), which is the third accused.

The controversy began when Karnataka’s BJP unit requested the court to issue a non-bailable warrant against Rahul Gandhi for failing to appear on June 1st. The BJP unit argued that his absence warranted stricter action, despite Congress’s assertion that Rahul Gandhi was not involved in the publication of the controversial advertisement.

In response to his absence, the court initially let Rahul Gandhi off the hook but emphasized the necessity of his presence on June 7th.

BJP MLC and General Secretary Keshav Prasad were the ones to file the defamation case against Congress. The crux of the issue lies in the Congress party’s allegations that a 40 percent commission was charged for the execution of all public works under the previous government. This accusation was highlighted in the advertisement, which also featured a ‘corruption rate card’ targeting the prior administration.

Congress’s advertisement claimed that a “40 percent commission was levied for the execution of all public works,” an assertion that led to the defamation case. The ‘corruption rate card’ in the advertisement specifically targeted the former BJP-led government, intensifying the political friction between the two parties.

The court proceedings today will mark a significant moment in this ongoing legal battle, as Rahul Gandhi’s appearance is anticipated to draw considerable public and media attention. The outcome could potentially influence the political landscape in Karnataka, especially in the context of the recent state elections.

The granting of bail to Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case filed by Karnataka’s BJP unit underscores the intensifying political and legal battle between the two major parties in the state. This development is significant for several reasons:

In conclusion, this case is not just a legal matter but a significant event in Karnataka’s political landscape. The outcomes of the legal proceedings and the strategies employed by both parties will have lasting effects on their political fortunes and the broader narrative around corruption and accountability in governance.
