A local MP-MLA court will hear on November 4 a defamation case filed against Rahul Gandhi by three men acquitted in the 2020 Hathras case. The trio claims Gandhi’s remark that “the accused are roaming free” defamed them despite their CBI acquittal.

In a recent update, a local MP-MLA court has fixed November 4 as the next date of hearing in a defamation case filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The case has been filed by three men who were acquitted in the 2020 Hathras gang-rape case.
They have alleged that Gandhi’s comments wrongly referred to them as “accused,” which they claim has damaged their reputation.
The case began after Rahul Gandhi, in December 2024, reportedly said that
“the accused are roaming free while the victim’s family is locked inside the house.”
The three men — Ram Kumar, Luvkush, and Ravi — who had already been acquitted by the CBI court, objected to this statement, saying it falsely portrayed them as criminals even after the court had cleared them of all charges.
Their lawyer has argued that Gandhi’s comment is defamatory since the CBI court had acquitted the three men after they spent more than two and a half years in jail.
According to the lawyer, Gandhi’s statement gave a wrong impression to the public, implying that innocent persons were still guilty of the crime.
After the remarks, the lawyer representing the three men sent a legal notice to Rahul Gandhi, demanding a total compensation of Rs 1.5 crore — that is, Rs 50 lakh each for the three men. However, since Gandhi did not respond to the notice, a criminal defamation complaint was filed in the local MP-MLA court.
In the 2020 Hathras gang-rape case, four men were originally accused. Later, during the trial, the CBI court found only one person, Sandeep, guilty, while Ram Kumar, Luvkush, and Ravi were acquitted of all charges.
Despite this, Gandhi’s alleged comment in December 2024 calling them “accused” has now led to this defamation case.
The matter will now be heard again on November 4, where the court is expected to consider the arguments from both sides.
