OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Denies Sister's Sexual Abuse Allegations as 'Entirely Untrue'

San Francisco: Ann Altman, sister of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has filed a lawsuit accusing him of sexually abusing her multiple times between 1997 and 2006. According to the lawsuit, submitted to the US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, Ann claims the abuse began when Sam was 12 years old, and she was just 3 years old.

The incidents allegedly continued until Ann was 11 and Sam was an adult, taking place in their family home in Clayton, Missouri, as reported by CNBC.

The court filing states that the abuse occurred “several times per week” and involved acts that began with oral sex and escalated to penetration. Ann Altman alleges that these events have left her with “severe emotional distress, mental anguish, and depression,” effects she says she continues to experience even today.

Reacting to these allegations, Sam Altman issued a family statement on January 7 through X, formerly Twitter. The statement, reportedly co-written with his mother, Connie, and brothers, Max and Jack, expresses the family’s concern for Ann’s well-being and links her accusations to mental health issues.

“Our family loves Annie and is very concerned about her well-being. Caring for a family member who faces mental health challenges is incredibly difficult. We know many families facing similar struggles understand this well,”

-the statement begins.

The statement outlines the family’s efforts to support Ann over the years, including financial help with bills, rent, medical expenses, job opportunities, and even an offer to purchase her a house. It also accuses Ann of making repeated monetary demands and spreading “deeply hurtful” claims that are “entirely untrue.”

“Despite this, Annie continues to demand more money from us. In this vein, Annie has made deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims about our family, especially Sam. We’ve chosen not to respond publicly, out of respect for her privacy and our own. However, she has now taken legal action against Sam, and we feel we have no choice but to address this,”

-the statement further reads.

The statement also addresses the specific allegations of sexual abuse, describing them as the “worst allegation” Ann has made.

“The worst allegation she has made is that she was sexually abused by Sam as a child (she has also claimed instances of sexual abuse from others). Her claims have evolved drastically over time. Newly for this lawsuit, they now include allegations of incidents where Sam was over 18,”

-the statement notes.

This lawsuit marks the first time Ann Altman has taken legal action against her brother, although she has previously made public accusations of sexual abuse.

The suit seeks a jury trial and damages exceeding $75,000.

Sam Altman is a prominent Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor who gained worldwide fame after the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022, a groundbreaking chatbot that sparked global interest in artificial intelligence.
