Mumbai court rejects BJP MP Narayan Rane’s plea to cancel summons in defamation case. Sanjay Raut alleges Rane made “malicious and false” remarks during Konkan Festival.

Mumbai: Today, on July 16, a special court in Mumbai rejected BJP MP Narayan Rane’s request to cancel the summons issued to him in a criminal defamation case filed by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut.
The case stems from Rane’s alleged remarks made against Raut during the Konkan Festival held in Bhandup on January 15, 2023.
According to the complaint filed by Raut, Rane had made “malicious and false” comments about him. The BJP leader had reportedly said that Raut’s name was not on the voters’ list and that he (Rane) had helped Raut get elected to the Rajya Sabha when he was still part of the Shiv Sena.
These comments, Raut claims, were damaging to his reputation and were made with the intention to defame him.
Taking note of the complaint, the magistrate’s court in Mazgaon issued summons to Narayan Rane in April 2024, initiating legal proceedings against him.

In response, Rane challenged the summons before the special court that deals with cases involving Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs).
In his plea, Rane argued that there was no valid defamation case against him. He also alleged that the magistrate had issued the summons without providing any specific reasoning or showing proper application of judicial mind.
His application specifically mentioned that the magistrate issued the summons without
“assigning any reasons or applying judicial mind.”
On the other side, Sanjay Raut’s lawyer, Advocate Sarthak Shetty, opposed Rane’s plea. He argued that the order issued by the magistrate was fully legal and that the statements made by Rane clearly amounted to defamation.
According to Shetty,
“there was no illegality in the magistrate’s order” and “there was a clear case of defamation.”
After hearing both sides, the special court rejected Narayan Rane’s application. However, the detailed reasoning behind the court’s decision has not been made public yet.

The defamation case will now proceed before the magistrate’s court as originally scheduled.
