A Hyderabad court closed the defamation case against Minister Konda Surekha after actor Akkineni Nagarjuna withdrew his complaint. The actor told the court he no longer wished to pursue the matter following Surekha’s public apology.

Hyderabad: A local magistrate court in Hyderabad has closed the defamation case filed against Telangana Minister Konda Surekha after popular Telugu actor Akkineni Nagarjuna decided to withdraw his complaint.

On Thursday, Nagarjuna filed a petition under Section 280 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which allows the withdrawal of a complaint, and the court accepted it.

According to the court order, Nagarjuna appeared virtually and informed the judge that he was taking back his complaint. The court stated,

“Hence the case was dismissed as withdrawn.”

The defamation case arose after Konda Surekha, who currently serves as the Minister of Forest in Telangana, made certain comments in October last year that were considered defamatory.

Her remarks sparked controversy and strong reactions from political circles as well as the Telugu film industry. Following the backlash, she had withdrawn her earlier statements at that time.

Nagarjuna had filed a criminal defamation complaint as the remarks made by Surekha allegedly involved his son, actor Naga Chaitanya. The magistrate court had previously recorded the statements of Nagarjuna and other witnesses related to the case.

On Wednesday, a day before the hearing, Konda Surekha again expressed regret and formally withdrew her statements against Nagarjuna and his family. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), she issued a public apology, saying,

“I had no intention of hurting or defaming Akkineni Nagarjuna Garu or his family members. I regret any unintended impression given in my statements in relation to them and withdraw the same.”

Her apology was seen as an effort to end the dispute amicably. Following her statement, Nagarjuna informed the court that he no longer wished to continue with the case.

The court, after considering Nagarjuna’s submission and the withdrawal of statements by the minister, officially closed the defamation proceedings.

With the case now dismissed, both parties appear to have put the controversy behind them, marking an amicable resolution to a dispute that had attracted widespread attention from both the political and entertainment communities.
