In a landmark ruling, a court sentenced 101 individuals to life imprisonment in a decade-old case involving severe atrocities committed against Dalits. The verdict serves as a powerful message on accountability, aiming to bring justice to the victims and reinforce the protection of marginalized communities.

Koppal (Karnataka): A court in Koppal district recently sentenced 101 individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in an incident where the hutments of the Dalit community were deliberately set on fire.
This judgment comes nearly a decade after the violent episode, which occurred on August 28, 2014, in Marakumbi village, Gangavathi Taluk.

The incident originated from escalating caste-based tensions after Dalits reportedly denied access to a local barber shop and eateries. These restrictions sparked clashes that culminated in the arson attack on the homes of Dalit community members, leading to a severe escalation of violence and widespread protests across the state.
After thorough deliberation, the court found the accused guilty, marking one of the largest convictions related to caste-based violence. The court’s sentence serves as a significant stand against caste-based discrimination and violence. Of the original 117 accused, 16 individuals passed away during the extended trial period.
The violence erupted in Marakumbi village, where the Dalit community faced severe social exclusion and restrictions. Tensions had been simmering in the area, stemming from discriminatory practices that prevented Dalits from accessing local barber shops and eateries, common places in villages for social interaction.
According to reports, members of the upper-caste communities enforced these restrictions, refusing entry to Dalits and further ostracizing them within their own community.

The denial of basic services escalated into a full-blown conflict on August 28, 2014. During this clash, members of the accused group set fire to the hutments and homes of the Dalit community. The arson attack left many families homeless, traumatized, and vulnerable. Witness accounts later described the horrifying night, as the attackers targeted homes and reduced them to ashes, leaving the Dalits with no possessions or shelter.
This historic verdict expected to have a ripple effect, bringing increased vigilance in addressing caste violence and discrimination. As India continues to grapple with issues of social equity and justice, the Koppal district court’s judgment stands as a landmark in the ongoing journey toward a more inclusive and equitable society.
