CHENNAI– In a disturbing incident that has sparked public outrage, a 25-year-old man was arrested by the Triplicane police for allegedly assaulting a female law student in broad daylight near the busy Anna Salai bus stop. The incident took place on Monday, April 7, and the accused, identified as R. Akash, a resident of Doomingkuppam, has since been remanded to judicial custody.
According to police sources, the victim, Kevin Rachel, a law student from a private college in Pallavaram and a resident of St. Thomas Mount, was waiting near the Anna Salai bus stop when she encountered Akash, who was reportedly a friend of one of her acquaintances.
A conversation ensued between the two, during which Rachel allegedly confronted Akash for frequently taking her friend to late-night house parties. The confrontation reportedly escalated into a heated argument.
In a sudden act of violence, Akash allegedly kicked Rachel multiple times in her abdomen, causing her to collapse to the ground in pain. Witnesses at the scene, including Akash’s companions, intervened and attempted to defuse the situation.
They reportedly helped Rachel get back home following the assault. However, she later began experiencing severe abdominal pain and sought medical attention at a nearby private hospital.
Following medical treatment, Rachel approached the Triplicane police station to file a formal complaint. Acting swiftly, police registered a case against Akash under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including provisions of the Prevention of Atrocities Against Women Act. He was subsequently arrested, produced before the Judicial Magistrate at Egmore, and remanded to Puzhal Central Prison.
A senior police official confirmed the arrest and stated that a detailed investigation is underway. Authorities have assured that the matter is being taken seriously and that appropriate legal action will follow.
