Supreme Court judge Justice Abhay S Oka inaugurated the new Thane court building and raised concern over 4.6 lakh pending cases. He urged Maharashtra to improve its judicial infrastructure without resentment.

Supreme Court judge Justice Abhay S Oka recently inaugurated the new building of the Thane District and Sessions Court on Saturday, April 26. During the ceremony, Justice Oka raised serious concern about the huge number of pending cases in the district.
He said that even after 75 years of India’s Independence, ordinary people still face a lot of struggle in getting timely justice. Justice Oka pointed out that in Thane district alone, there are a total of 4,64,938 cases that are still pending. Out of these, around 3,51,000 are criminal cases.
Speaking about the situation of judicial infrastructure, Justice Oka, who earlier served as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, said,
“The judicial facilities in Karnataka are better than those in Maharashtra.” He made it clear that this comparison should not create any resentment.
Instead, he said,
“this should not cause resentment but should inspire the Maharashtra government to improve the situation.”
Justice Oka’s comments reflect the serious need to improve the judicial system to ensure that justice is not delayed for the people. He highlighted that improving court infrastructure and speeding up the disposal of cases is very important for strengthening public trust in the judiciary.
His remarks also underline that good infrastructure and timely justice go hand in hand, and Maharashtra must focus more on these areas to match the standards of better-performing states.

Justice Oka’s inauguration of the Thane District and Sessions Court’s new building is expected to bring some relief to the judiciary in the district. However, the concern he showed regarding the high number of pending cases points to the bigger challenges that still lie ahead.
His speech at the event was a reminder that while new buildings are important, the real success will come only when the system delivers faster and more effective justice for everyone.
