A Kerala court has remanded senior lawyer Beylin Das to 14 days in custody following assault allegations by a female junior. The Kerala Bar Council has temporarily barred him from practising law over the “shameful act.”

A senior lawyer accused of violently assaulting his female junior colleague has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by a magistrate court. Judicial First Class Magistrate 11, Revitha K G, ordered the remand after advocate Beylin Das was presented in court following his arrest on Friday night.

Advocate Dileep Sathyan, representing Das, confirmed that his client would remain in custody for the duration of the remand. He also mentioned that the court is set to hear Das’ bail application on Saturday.

In the bail plea, the accused asserts that none of the charges against him are substantiated and claims that he was also assaulted by his junior colleague, Shyamily, according to Sathyan.

He stated,

“The court has noted the injuries suffered by my client on his forehead and ear.”

Das was taken into custody just hours after he filed for anticipatory bail.

The Vanchiyoor police reported that he had been evading capture in various locations around the state capital since the incident on May 13.

The family of the woman has denied the allegation that she assaulted the senior lawyer, suggesting it is an attempt to create grounds for Das to secure bail. A senior member of the Bar Association at the Vanchiyoor court reportedly claimed that Shyamily had attacked Das.

On Wednesday, Shyamily indicated her intent to pursue all legal avenues to prevent Das from practicing law in the future.

The Kerala Bar Council also announced on Wednesday that Das has been temporarily barred from practicing law due to his “shameful act.”

Shyamily alleged that Das had previously assaulted her when she was five months pregnant.

She stated,

“He (Beylin) gets angry very quickly if we question anything he says or does. He had hit me earlier when I questioned his behaviour of throwing files at me. This time too, he got angry over an internal matter and assaulted me,”

The accused lawyer did not respond to requests for comment.
