Patna: A dramatic moment unfolded in Patna Civil Court on Wednesday when Ritlal Yadav, a well-known leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and current MLA from Danapur, made a shocking request before the judge.
Speaking emotionally from inside the courtroom, Yadav said,
“Huzoor, give me euthanasia (practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve suffering). Case after case is being filed against me. I have no one to fight for me.”
This unexpected statement left everyone in the courtroom stunned. Ritlal Yadav appeared before the court through video conferencing from Bhagalpur Central Jail, where he has been kept since May 1, 2025. Earlier, he was lodged in Beur Jail in Patna but was shifted due to security concerns.
Sources from inside the jail revealed that Ritlal Yadav has been placed in a high-security T-cell at Bhagalpur, the same cell once used by Anant Singh, a former don-turned-politician who is now back in Beur Jail.
Yadav’s legal troubles intensified after he surrendered on April 17 in connection with a serious extortion case. He was accused of demanding Rs 50 lakh from a local builder in Danapur. After his surrender, police kept him in Beur Jail. However, his regular contact with known criminal associates raised red flags for the police.

Intelligence reports suggested that Ritlal Yadav could misuse his influence from within Beur Jail to manage or organize criminal activities. Based on this alert, Patna police submitted a report to the Jail Department. Following this, the administration took the decision to shift him to Bhagalpur Central Jail for stricter isolation and monitoring.
During the hearing in the special MP-MLA court, Yadav looked exhausted and distressed. In a desperate tone, he said,
“I am tired. I have no support system here. Please transfer me back to Beur.”
He explained that he was facing complete loneliness in Bhagalpur Jail and did not have any legal help or emotional support. His request was not just for mercy but also for being sent back to the previous jail where he felt at least some sense of familiarity.
While Ritlal Yadav fights multiple legal battles, his wife Rinku Kumari has also landed in serious trouble. Rinku, who is working as a contractual government school teacher, has been accused of violating service rules.
A report by Additional Director General (Operations) Kundan Krishnan, submitted to the Education Department, revealed that Rinku Kumari became a business partner in Vijay Construction Company on November 11, 2017, while still serving as a government teacher. Official records confirm she has been working at a primary school in Kothwan Mushari, Patna since July 1, 2006.
This is seen as a clear violation of Rule 16(1) of the Bihar Government Servants Code of Conduct, 1976, which strictly bans government employees from engaging in private businesses.
Her alleged partnership in the private construction company while holding a government post could now trigger departmental action.
As of now, both Ritlal Yadav and his wife Rinku Kumari are under scrutiny—one inside the jail and the other inside the education department.
What Is Euthanasia?
Euthanasia is the practice of intentionally ending a person’s life to relieve them from severe pain, suffering, or an incurable illness. It is also sometimes called “mercy killing.”
There are two main types:
- Voluntary Euthanasia – When a person asks or agrees to end their own life because they are suffering.
- Involuntary or Non-Voluntary Euthanasia – When the person cannot give consent (like in a coma) and someone else decides on their behalf.
Euthanasia means helping a person to die peacefully and quickly, when they are going through very painful illness or suffering that cannot be cured, and they don’t want to live like that anymore.
Is Euthanasia Legal in India?
No, euthanasia is generally illegal in India. However, in 2018, the Supreme Court of India allowed “passive euthanasia”, which means:
- A person who is in a permanent coma or brain-dead condition
- Can be allowed to die naturally by removing life support (like ventilators), but only with court approval and under strict guidelines.
