Today, On 18th December, A Delhi court granted Umar Khalid, an activist charged in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, a 7-day bail to attend a family marriage. The court approved his request for temporary release with the condition that he refrains from influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence. The bail was specifically granted to allow Khalid to participate in the family event.

New Delhi: A Delhi court granted Umar Khalid, one of the accused in the larger conspiracy case related to the Delhi riots, interim bail for seven days on Wednesday.
Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma Court approved the bail to allow Khalid to attend his cousin sister’s wedding.
Khalid arrested in September 2020 and faces charges including criminal conspiracy, rioting, and unlawful assembly, along with several offenses under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). He has been incarcerated since that time, and his regular bail application is currently pending in the Delhi High Court.

The trial court initially denied him bail in March 2022. Following this, he approached the High Court, which also rejected his request in October 2022, leading him to appeal to the Supreme Court. In May 2023, the Supreme Court requested a response from the Delhi Police regarding the matter, but his plea was adjourned 14 times.
On February 14, 2024, Khalid withdrew his bail petition from the Supreme Court citing changed circumstances. Subsequently, on May 28, the trial court denied his second bail petition, prompting him to appeal again in the High Court.
A Division Bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur is currently hearing that plea.
Meanwhile, he filed a request for interim bail in the trial court to attend the family event, which was granted today.
In September 2020, Umar Khalid arrested amidst allegations of being a central figure in the February Delhi riots. His legal ordeal has been fraught with challenges, with charges ranging from criminal conspiracy to offenses under the UAPA.
Despite seeking bail initially denied by the trial court in March 2022 and subsequently rejected by the Delhi High Court in October 2022, Khalid’s Patience led him to take his case to the Supreme Court of India.
In May 2023, Khalid’s plea reached the Supreme Court, prompting the court to request a response from the Delhi Police. Despite this, the proceedings faced multiple adjournments, with the plea postponed on 14 occasions. On February 14, 2024, the Supreme Court scheduled to review the bail request. However, Khalid’s legal representative, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, opted to strategically retract the plea from the Supreme Court.
The journey of Umar Khalid’s bail plea has seen multiple stages. He decided to challenge the Delhi High Court’s judgment from October 2022, which had denied him bail. Khalid’s initial arrest executed by the Delhi Police in September 2020, where he charged with several offenses.
These charges encompassed criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly, and other serious allegations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Since that time, Khalid has been under continuous detention.
