Yesterday, On 6th July, A Mumbai court denied interim relief to a man accused of creating deepfake videos of Amitabh Bachchan. The accused, fearing arrest, had applied for anticipatory bail and sought interim protection until his plea resolved. The court, however, refused to grant the temporary relief.
Mumbai: A court in Mumbai, On Saturday, denied interim protection from arrest to the owner of an Ayurvedic company based in Uttarakhand.
The owner, Abhijit Patil, booked for allegedly creating and posting a deepfake video of the renowned actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Sessions judge V M Pathade rejected Patil’s request for interim protection from arrest. Patil runs an Ayurvedic company in Rishikesh.
In May, Bachchan filed a case with the cyber police after discovering several deepfake videos on social media that showed him endorsing products from Patil’s company. The accused individual allegedly responsible for creating and posting obscene deepfake videos of the actor to promote sexual health products.
Fearing arrest, Patil applied for anticipatory bail before a sessions court and sought interim relief until his plea decided. However, the court denied his request for interim protection from arrest.
In their written response to Patil’s plea, the police emphasized that individuals accused of cyber crimes often believe they will receive bail, even in cases where they have stolen the identities of celebrities and actors to create obscene videos.
Special Public Prosecutor Iqbal Solkar, representing the police, argued that granting relief to the accused would hinder the investigation.
The police further contended that the accused had deceived the public and the actor’s fans “by creating a deepfake and using obscene language.”
The case has been adjourned for a hearing on the accused’s pre-arrest bail plea. According to the police, they have recorded statements from Patil’s employees, who revealed that the accused created the deepfake videos and posted them on social media.
The police stated that they sent a notice to Patil, asking him to appear before the cyber police on July 4. Despite coming to the city, the accused did not appear before the police as requested.

Amitabh Bachchan lodged a complaint with the cyber police in May after discovering multiple deepfake videos on social media that depicted him endorsing Patil’s company’s products. The hearing for the accused’s anticipatory bail plea has been rescheduled.
The decision comes amidst growing concerns over the misuse of advanced digital technologies to produce deceptive video content that can tarnish reputations and spread misinformation. This case highlights the legal challenges and ethical implications tied to the rapid advancement of such technologies in the digital media landscape.
