Thane, Mumbai: Today(Oct 26): The Commission of Inquiry investigating the police shooting of Akshay Shinde, accused in the Badlapur school sexual assault case, has invited individuals “personally acquainted” with or impacted by the incident to submit their statements.
The inquiry is being led by the Justice Dilip Bhosale Commission, which issued a notification calling for statements on the matter.
BRIEF FACTS
Shinde, a school attendant, was accused of sexually abusing two young girls, aged four and five, inside a school toilet in Badlapur, Thane district, in August. He was arrested but later killed in an alleged police encounter on September 23.
Following the incident, the Maharashtra Government constituted the single-member Commission of Inquiry under Justice Dilip Bhosale, retired Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, to investigate the matter.
The commission’s mandate includes examining the events that unfolded during the shootout on the Mumbra bypass on September 23, the police’s role, and the factors leading to Shinde’s death. It will also assess whether any individuals, groups, or organizations were directly or indirectly involved in the incident and whether the police actions were appropriate.
In addition to reviewing the sequence of events, the panel will recommend both short-term and long-term measures to help the police prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The notification states:
“All persons personally acquainted with, affected by, or connected to the events before, during, or after the incident of September 23, 2024, are requested to submit their statements to the commission in the form of an affidavit.”
