PUNJAB: The Chandigarh District Court on Saturday (03rd Aug), a suspended Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police, Malvinder Singh Sidhu, fatally shot his son-in-law, an IRS officer in the Agricultural Department, during a domestic dispute resolution meeting.

Sidhu, who had been suspended from his duties due to previous controversies, arrived at the Chandigarh Family Court with his family to address ongoing domestic issues. Eyewitnesses reported that Sidhu requested to use the restroom, and his son-in-law offered to accompany him. The situation escalated outside the meeting room, leading to a deadly confrontation.
According to reports, Sidhu fired five shots from his handgun, two of which struck his son-in-law fatally. One bullet hit the door of the meeting room, while the remaining shots missed their target. The gunfire caused immediate chaos within the courthouse premises.
Lawyers present at the scene acted quickly, detaining Sidhu and confining him in a room until the police arrived. The injured IRS officer was rushed to Sector 16 Hospital but succumbed to his injuries en route.
The police have taken Sidhu into custody and initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. Several judges and additional law enforcement personnel converged on the scene to assess the situation and ensure safety.
Last year, he was arrested on corruption charges and had implicated his son-in-law in the misconduct. The altercation during his arrest involved physical confrontations with the police.
