Brutal Murder of College Student | “He Killed Woman For Refusing To Marry Him”: Assam Court Sentences Man to Death

ASSAM: A Dhemaji court in Assam has sentenced a man to death for the brutal murder of a college student in 2021. The case, which shocked the state, has finally reached its conclusion after a four-year-long trial.

What was the Incident?

On August 21, 2021, tragedy struck when Rintu Sarma, an employee of Moridhal College in Dhemaji, brutally attacked 23-year-old student Nandita near the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) bus stand. Sarma, angered by Nandita’s refusal of his marriage proposal, stabbed her multiple times with a machete. Despite being rushed to a private nursing home in Dibrugarh, Nandita succumbed to her injuries on August 25.

The attack did not end there. Another student, Kashmina Dutta, and her father, Deba Dutta, were also severely injured as Sarma targeted them in the assault. Following the incident, Sarma surrendered himself to the police.

The Trial

The case underwent a lengthy four-year trial. The prosecution submitted a comprehensive 400-page chargesheet, and as many as 41 witnesses were examined during the proceedings. The case was closely followed across the state due to its brutal nature and the demand for strict justice.

On Wednesday, Judge Kalyanjit Saikia of the District and Sessions Court convicted Sarma under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including:

The Judgment

In delivering the sentence, the judge noted that the crime fell under the “rarest of rare” category as defined by the Supreme Court. Judge Saikia observed that awarding life imprisonment in this case would be inadequate to meet the ends of justice.

Therefore, Sarma was sentenced to death under Section 302 IPC, with the court ordering that he be hanged by the neck until death.
