AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack. A Nagaon court has sent him to 4-day police custody for further questioning.

Nagaon (Assam), April 25: Aminul Islam, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), has been sent to police custody for four days by a court in Assam. He was arrested on Thursday on charges of sedition after allegedly making statements in public that were seen as supporting Pakistan and questioning its involvement in the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the police, the remarks made by the three-time MLA were considered “misleading and instigating statements in public, which went viral and had potential to create an adverse situation.” These statements, reportedly shared widely on social media, were seen as harmful to public peace and national interest.
The case was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Nagaon, Monoshreeporna Khound, who listened to the arguments from both the prosecution and the defence side.
After considering all the facts and circumstances, the CJM approved a four-day police remand for the legislator. This means the police will now have four days to interrogate him further to gather more information about the case.
The police believe that his remarks could stir public unrest and create serious law and order issues, especially in a sensitive area like Assam which has a complex socio-political atmosphere.
He is being investigated under charges that include sedition, a serious offence under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with actions or speech that incite discontent or hatred against the government.
Officials involved in the case said that the MLA’s comments, which allegedly defended Pakistan in the context of a terror attack carried out on Indian soil, could influence people negatively.
The exact content of his statement has not been officially disclosed yet, but the police have treated the matter seriously due to its potential impact.
The authorities acted swiftly after the video of his statement began circulating widely. His arrest was made shortly after an official complaint was filed, and he was then brought before the magistrate for legal proceedings. The police had requested custody of the MLA so they could question him in detail about the source and intention behind his comments.
As of now, Aminul Islam has not made any public statements about the charges or his arrest. His party, AIUDF, is also yet to release an official statement responding to the development. The incident has sparked a political debate in the state, with many leaders condemning the remarks and demanding strict action.
The investigation is ongoing, and more developments are expected once the police complete the initial round of questioning during the four-day remand period.
