New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia strongly criticized BJP MP Manoj Tiwari on Monday for sharing a misleading, shortened video of AAP’s senior leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The Viral Video: What Did Manoj Tiwari Share?
Mr. Tiwari posted a 9-second video clip on the platform X (formerly Twitter), in which Mr. Kejriwal can be heard saying,
“Someone was saying that whoever has written the Constitution must be drunk while writing it.”
This post by the BJP MP came amidst ongoing debates sparked by Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar, the revered architect of the Indian Constitution.
Sharing the video, Mr. Tiwari remarked,
“I found this video of the head of Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party. After listening to which everyone will be able to see his true colours.”
Manish Sisodia’s Response: The Full Context
Reacting sharply, Mr. Sisodia accused Mr. Tiwari of twisting facts and shared the full 19-second video for proper context. The full clip revealed that Mr. Kejriwal was not referring to the Indian Constitution but was speaking about the Constitution of the Congress party, which reportedly prohibits party workers from consuming alcohol.
In the complete video, Mr. Kejriwal is heard saying,
“Constitution of Congress party says no worker shall consume liquor. Someone amongst us said the one who wrote the Constitution must have been drunk while writing it.”
Sisodia Calls Out Manoj Tiwari’s Misleading Claims
Mr. Sisodia lashed out at Mr. Tiwari for acting like a “cheap troll” and urged him to behave responsibly as an MP. He stated,
“You are an MP, have some shame. You are tweeting lies. If not yourself, at least respect the post of an MP.”
Manoj Tiwari’s Counterattack
In response, Mr. Tiwari argued that debates should maintain “decorum” and took issue with Mr. Sisodia’s choice of words. He said,
“You got so angry that you called me shameless.”
He further questioned Mr. Kejriwal’s words, adding,
“If the members of Congress wrote the Constitution of the party after drinking alcohol, then how can Arvind Kejriwal interpret it to mean that ‘whoever wrote the Constitution, wrote it after drinking alcohol’? What is the meaning of ‘whoever wrote the Constitution’?”
Continuing his criticism, he said,
“How can Arvind Kejriwal dare to say this? Is there a difference between the Constitution of India and Congress’ Constitution or not?”
The Larger Controversy: Amit Shah’s Remarks on BR Ambedkar
The verbal spat between the two leaders unfolded shortly after a major political controversy erupted over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar during the Winter Session of Parliament.
While addressing the Rajya Sabha during a debate marking 75 years of the Constitution, Mr. Shah remarked,
“It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they took God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven.”
He added,
“Take his name 100 times more, but I want to say, what are your sentiments about him?”
These comments triggered a backlash from the AAP, Congress, and other Opposition parties, who accused Mr. Shah of insulting the Dalit icon BR Ambedkar. They demanded his resignation and an apology.
Mr. Shah, however, denied any wrongdoing, asserting that his remarks were misinterpreted and twisted by Opposition leaders.
Conclusion: Politics Over the Constitution Debate
This incident reflects the intensifying political battle between the BJP and AAP, with leaders from both sides engaging in fiery exchanges.
The controversy around Mr. Shah’s comments on BR Ambedkar added further fuel to the fire, showcasing how discussions around sensitive topics like the Constitution often turn into heated political showdowns.
Both parties continue to accuse each other of misrepresenting facts and disrespecting the values enshrined in the Constitution.
