This case is about a second-year student at Anna University who was sexually assaulted on campus in December last year. After the case was reported, the Chennai Police arrested Gnanasekaran.

The police carried out a fast investigation, and the case was taken up by the Special Investigation Team (SIT). A chargesheet was filed at the Mahila Court, and after hearing the evidence, the court gave its final decision.

Mahila Court Judge M. Rajalakshmi had already declared Gnanasekaran guilty on May 28. On June 2, she gave separate punishments for all the 11 serious charges that were proved against him.

Public Prosecutor Marry Jayanthi told the media,

“As far as the Gnanasekaran case is concerned, we have got the verdict today. 30 years without remission have been provided. SIT enquired into the incident; they filed a charge sheet at the Mahila court. April 30 for the first time, affected women took the stage. All evidence was provided, as it was satisfactory for the court; today this judgement has come. The highest punishment is a life sentence for this case, and it has been provided.”

The Tamil Nadu government and police were praised for acting quickly. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also appreciated the police officers and government lawyers involved in this case.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), he said that the police acted quickly and the case was solved within five months.

He said,

“We will always ensure justice and the safety of women.”

Stalin also added that he had told the police to take strong action against crimes and make sure that no criminal escapes.

If any crime happens, it should be properly investigated and the guilty should be punished. He also criticized the opposition parties who had blamed the ruling DMK government during the incident.

According to him, some people tried to use this painful incident for “cheap politics”. He said, We will always ensure justice and women’s safety.
