New Delhi: A Delhi court postponed its decision in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots murder case involving former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to February 12.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, who was set to deliver the ruling on Friday, has deferred the announcement.
The case concerns the deaths of two individuals in the Saraswati Vihar area during the anti-Sikh riots of 1984.
The case is about the alleged murder of Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh, in Saraswati Vihar on November 1, 1984, during the anti-Sikh riots after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated.
The case, stemming from the violent events of 1984, has been a focal point of significant legal and public attention, seeking justice for the victims and scrutinizing the legal outcomes for those accused. The upcoming session in July expected to delve into detailed arguments from both the prosecution and the defence, reassessing the evidence that was presented in the original trial.
Former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who is currently in Tihar Jail, appeared before the court through video conferencing.
Earlier, the court had reserved its decision after hearing the final arguments. As per the prosecution, a violent mob, armed with weapons, carried out looting and arson to take revenge for Gandhi’s assassination. The mob allegedly attacked the complainant’s house, killed her husband and son, stole valuables, and set the house on fire.
The case was first investigated by Punjabi Bagh police but was later handed over to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for further inquiry. On December 16, 2021, the court framed charges against Kumar, saying there was “prima facie” evidence that he not only took part in the attack but also led the mob.
Previously, in May 2020, the Supreme Court had denied Sajjan Kumar interim bail or parole on health grounds. Both Kumar and Khokhar are currently incarcerated in Tihar jail following their convictions by the Delhi High Court on December 17, 2018.
