A newly-married woman from Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) has asked for a divorce just three days after her wedding, saying that her husband admitted on their wedding night that he was not physically capable of having marital relations.

According to police, the woman decided to leave the marriage after hearing this, and her family later claimed that a medical report confirmed the groom “cannot become a father”.

In the legal notice sent by the woman, she said,

“I cannot spend my life with a man who is physically incapable. I came to know about this on the wedding night when he told me himself.”

The groom, who is 25 years old, is the only son of a well-to-do farmer family from Sahjanwa and works as an engineer at an industrial unit under the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA).

The marriage had been arranged through relatives connected to the bride’s family in Beliapar. The wedding took place on November 28, and the ‘vidai’ ceremony was held the next day.

The issue came out on December 1 when the bride’s father went to visit her at her in-laws’ house for a traditional post-wedding ritual.

The bride reportedly told him privately that the groom had confessed to being medically unfit for marital relations. After hearing this, her family immediately brought her back home without informing the groom’s family.

On December 3, both families met at a relative’s house in Beliapar. The bride’s family accused the groom’s side of hiding his health condition before marriage. They also alleged that this was the groom’s second marriage and that his first wife had left within a month two years ago due to the same problem.

With the agreement of both sides, the groom was taken to a private hospital in Gorakhpur for medical tests. According to the bride’s family, the report confirmed that he was medically unfit and “cannot become a father”.

However, the groom’s father at first refused to accept the medical findings. This led the bride’s family to approach the Sahjanwa police and ask that all wedding expenses and gifts be returned.

After police intervention, both families reached a settlement. The groom’s family agreed to return ₹7 lakh spent on the wedding along with all gifts within one month. Relatives from both sides signed an agreement confirming this settlement.

Sahjanwa SHO Mahesh Chaubey confirmed that the police had received a complaint in the matter and said that “both families are in touch, and the matter is being resolved mutually.”
