MADHYA PRADESH: The Opposition started to protest, demanding the resignation of Cabinet Minister Vijay Shah. The issue, which arose from a controversial remark made by Shah during a tribal event in Mhow (Military Headquarters of War), has not only disrupted Assembly proceedings but also caught the attention of the Supreme Court.

The fifth day of the Assembly’s monsoon session on August 2 saw repeated disruptions. As soon as Vijay Shah rose to respond to a departmental query, the House was engulfed in slogans of “Vijay Shah resign!” The uproar forced Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar to adjourn the House twice, first for ten minutes and then for half an hour, before suspending proceedings for the day until August 4.

When the session resumed, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar reignited the issue. He accused the government of shielding Shah despite the Supreme Court’s clear discontent with his apology.

“The court said Vijay Shah must apologise publicly, but he refuses to do so, Isn’t this an insult to women and to public service?

said Singhar.

In response to the Opposition’s demands, Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya countered sharply, alleging that the Congress was “speaking Pakistan’s language” and disrespecting the dignity of the House.

Cabinet Minister Vishwas Sarang also lashed out at the Congress, calling their protest a political stunt.

“They created a ruckus over a question related to gas victims, which is extremely insensitive,

” he stated.

He added that raising an issue pending before the court in the Assembly was against legislative traditions and demanded an apology from the Congress.

Sarang went further, claiming:

“Congress has consistently insulted the armed forces. These are the same people who are out on bail. Are they even fit to be in the House?”

The Supreme Court’s Intervention

Vijay Shah’s controversy isn’t limited to Assembly politics. The Supreme Court earlier expressed dissatisfaction with his online apology and demanded a public apology. Following this, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed on May 19 to probe the matter.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) visited Raukunda village, the location of the controversial remark, and gathered statements from over 125 people, including BJP leaders, university officials, journalists, and NCC cadets. The investigation, backed by the Indore police, was formally documented and submitted to the court. The SIT is expected to submit its next report on August 13.

Opposition leader Singhar also accused the government of avoiding a serious discussion on tribal evictions. He reminded the Assembly that a motion had been submitted over a week ago.

“Tribals are being evicted from forests in the name of rights,”

he said, alleging that the government was using the Shah controversy to divert attention from more pressing issues.
