NEW DELHI: Opposition INDIA alliance nominated Justice (Retd.) B Sudershan Reddy, former Supreme Court judge, as its candidate for Vice-President. On Thursday morning, Reddy left for filing his nomination papers, calling it a “simple program” and promising to interact with the media once the process concluded.
Leaders from multiple INDIA bloc parties were present to extend their support as the nomination filing was scheduled for 11:30 AM.
Speaking to reporters, Reddy emphasized that his candidature represents a contest of ideology rather than numbers. He said,
“Numbers matter continues… Of course, I am hopeful. Since I don’t belong to any political party, I believe everyone would support me. It is the battle of ideology.”
Reddy’s candidature comes against the NDA’s nominee CP Radhakrishnan, making this a high-stakes contest for the second-highest constitutional office in India.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, while addressing INDIA bloc members at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan on Wednesday, underlined the symbolic importance of nominating a former Supreme Court judge. According to Kharge, the decision reflects the opposition’s firm commitment to fairness, impartiality, and dignity in the functioning of the Rajya Sabha.
He criticized the ruling government for allegedly stifling the opposition in Parliament,
“In Parliament, we have seen a growing trend of stifling opposition voices. We are repeatedly denied the opportunity to raise matters of vital public concern in the House. To resist and decisively act against these transgressions in Parliament, the nation needs an exemplary, impartial justice B. Sudershan Reddy as the Vice-President of India.”
Kharge further said that Reddy’s life and judicial work reflect the very spirit of the Constitution, a commitment to fairness, compassion, and empowerment of citizens.
