“I Have Turned Vegan For a Cruelty-Free Life & Stopped Buying Silk Or Leather”: CJI DY Chandrachud

Today, On 5th August, Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, announced his transition to a vegan lifestyle, stating he would no longer use silk or leather products. He made this declaration during the launch of the Digital Law Reports of the Delhi High Court and the inauguration of a Sagar Ratna restaurant outlet on the High Court campus.

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud announced on Monday that he has adopted a vegan lifestyle, inspired by his daughter to embrace a cruelty-free life.

He emphasized that he abstains from using leather or silk products and that his wife shares this commitment.

He stated,

“I have two daughters who are differently abled, and they inspire me in everything I do. Recently, I chose to go vegan after my daughter suggested we should live a cruelty-free life. I don’t purchase any silk products or new leather items, and my wife follows the same practice,”

He made these remarks during the launch of the Digital Law Reports of the Delhi High Court and the inauguration of a Sagar Ratna restaurant outlet on the High Court campus, which will be operated by neuro-diverse individuals.

In his speech, the CJI also shared his insights and experiences with differently-abled persons.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud remarked,

“Each day, my interactions with differently-abled individuals reveal their immense potential, This Sagar Ratna outlet operated by neuro-diverse individuals is not an isolated initiative; it has become a movement. The establishment of Mitti Cafe in the Supreme Court was warmly received by the legal community.”

Mitti Café, fully managed by disabled persons, was inaugurated in the Supreme Court premises in November 2023.

CJI Chandrachud‘s commitment to ethical living and inclusivity highlights a broader societal shift towards embracing diversity and promoting sustainability.
