Supreme Court Security Tightened After Advocate Rakesh Kishore Attempts to Throw Shoe at CJI B.R. Gavai. Over 700 Delhi Police and Central Security Personnel Deployed Across Court Complex to Ensure Safety During Ongoing Proceedings

According to officials, the Supreme Court complex is secured by over 700 personnel from the Delhi Police and various central security agencies.
Each courtroom is equipped with its own security detail, and the Chief Justice, who has Z-plus security, benefits from an additional dedicated team.
Earlier, On Monday, around 10-12 Delhi Police officers were present in Court No. 1 when an incident involving an advocate occurred around 11:30 a.m.
The advocate, Rakesh Kishore, attempted to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice of India, B.R. Gavai, during ongoing court proceedings.
Eyewitnesses reported that he suddenly removed his shoe and hurled it toward the dais, but security personnel quickly intervened, preventing the shoe from reaching the Bench. Order was restored shortly thereafter, and he was taken into custody for questioning by the Delhi Police.
The advocate was released from custody the following day, as the Delhi Police stated that no formal complaint had been lodged by Supreme Court officials. He had been interrogated for three hours by the Delhi Police Security Unit and New Delhi Police within the Supreme Court before his release.
Those present noted that the Chief Justice maintained his composure, instructing the bar and court staff to continue with the day’s proceedings, emphasizing that such disruptions would not impact him or the court’s function.
The advocate’s actions reportedly stemmed from remarks made by the CJI during a recent hearing concerning the restoration of a 7-foot beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.
The CJI had stated,
“Go and ask the deity now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu, so go and pray now.”
In response to the backlash over his statements regarding the Khajuraho Vishnu Idol matter, He later clarified his comments, stating,
“I respect all religions,”
It was also noted that the advocate shouted slogans advocating for the protection of Sanatan Dharma before being escorted from the courtroom.
During his detention, police found a handwritten note expressing his grievances about perceived disrespect toward his religious beliefs. His belongings, including the shoe and the note, were returned to him.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented on the incident via X, stating,
“Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable. I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice Gavai in the face of such a situation. It highlights his commitment to values of justice and strengthening the spirit of our Constitution.”
The Prime Minister’s statement emphasized the seriousness of the incident, conveying that such actions target not just an individual but the institution embodying constitutional justice.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also condemned the attempted attack on Chief Justice Gavai, labeling it “unfortunate and deserving of condemnation,” attributing it to misinformation spread on social media.
He praised the Chief Justice for his dignified response, expressing hope that such magnanimity would not be misconstrued as weakness in the institution.
