MUMBAI: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had invited Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai’s mother, Kamaltai Gavai, to attend its Vijayadashami and centenary event in Amravati. A twist in the narrative has emerged.
In a handwritten letter, Kamaltai reportedly declined the invitation, firmly identifying herself as a “staunch Ambedkarite.” The letter dismisses earlier claims about her attendance as “a conspiracy” and “completely false news” allegedly spread by the RSS.
Earlier, several news channels had claimed that Kamaltai would attend the RSS’s Vijayadashami program, which was set to be hosted by the organisation’s Amravati Mahanagar unit at Srimati Narsamma Mahavidyalaya Maidan on October 5.
Adding to the speculation, Rajendra Gavai, Kamaltai’s younger son and a politician, confirmed that his mother had agreed to attend. He stressed that attending such events should not be equated with political alignment.
Rajendra cited their father, the late R.S. Gavai, a senior Ambedkarite leader, former Governor of Bihar and Kerala, and founder of RPI (Gavai), as an example.
“My father was close to politicians across party lines, including Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Attending events never meant he compromised on his political views,”
Rajendra said.
He further clarified that the event Kamaltai was invited to was not the main RSS Vijayadashami event, but a local program.
Within hours of Rajendra’s statement, Kamaltai’s letter of refusal began circulating in the media. In it, she strongly denied agreeing to attend the event, reiterating her Ambedkarite convictions.
However, questions remain about the authenticity of the letter. It was unable to verify whether the letter was indeed issued by Kamaltai independently. Despite repeated attempts, she did not respond to calls or messages.
Even Rajendra appeared uncertain about its authenticity, stating:
“My mother has been depressed. She is not taking anyone’s calls, including mine. I cannot confirm if the letter circulating in the media is truly hers. But if it is her letter, I stand by her.”
