Former CJI D.Y. Chandrachud said judges heal society not only through rulings but also by listening patiently. Speaking at Meghalaya High Court’s Independence Day event, he stressed freedom, diversity, and youth empowerment.

New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, has said that judges hold a very important responsibility in society. He explained that the role of judges is not only to give verdicts but also to reduce the pain and suffering of people.
According to him, this is possible not just through judgments, but also through the act of listening with care and patience.
He highlighted the importance of empathy in the judicial system, saying,
“Sometimes, listening patiently to a citizen is also a healing act.”
Justice Chandrachud, who was the chief guest at the 79th Independence Day celebrations of the Meghalaya High Court, further reminded the audience that real independence goes beyond political freedom.
He said,
“Freedom was not just freedom from colonial rule, but also inner liberation of mind and soul.”
During his speech, the former CJI encouraged the younger generation to value India’s diversity and use their creativity and skills for the nation’s growth.
He called upon the youth to protect the essence of India while building their future, urging them to stay motivated and contribute positively.
Chandrachud specifically told the youth to safeguard the country’s inclusive culture, stating that they should nurture their entrepreneurial energy and turn it into self-confidence and progress.
He praised the Meghalaya High Court for its role in protecting justice and acting as a connecting bridge between citizens and the system of law.
Appreciating its work, he remarked that the High Court has stood firm as the “sentinel of governance” and has built trust in a state known for its deep cultural richness.
Apart from this, the former CJI also spoke about the progress India has made over the years. He pointed out achievements in different areas such as education, infrastructure development, and food self-sufficiency.
He further mentioned that better road and transport facilities between Guwahati and Shillong represent the steady progress of the nation. While praising these advancements, he noted the importance of keeping development people-centric and inclusive.
