The All India Shia Personal Law Board is set to address key issues such as the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttar Pradesh, allegations of corruption in waqf boards, as well as concerns related to minority rights, socio-economic disadvantages, and political representation of Shia Muslims during its annual national convention on December 28.

Earlier this year, Uttarakhand became the first state in India to implement the UCC.
At a recent press conference, the president of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, Maulana Syed Saem Mehdi, along with general secretary Maulana Yasoob Abbas, emphasized that the convention would address requests for the reconstruction of shrines at Jannat-ul-Baqi in Madinah.
Additionally, they will discuss the establishment of a distinct committee, similar to the Sachar Committee, to evaluate the circumstances of Shia Muslims and ensure that minority welfare benefits are distributed in accordance with their population size.
The meeting will also explore the need for job reservations for Shia Muslims based on economic disadvantage, the underrepresentation of approximately eight crore Shias in legislative bodies, and proposals for social reforms to mitigate excessive spending on weddings and mourning rituals.
Abbas highlighted the agenda’s focus on condemning terrorism, both nationally and internationally, and on legal strategies to curb hate speech and lynchings, as well as reinforcing educational opportunities for the community.
Further discussions will include allegations of corruption within waqf boards, issues related to the sale of waqf properties, and the Waqf Act, 2024, as well as opposition to any hijab restrictions.
The convention will commence at 11 am at Asafi Imambara and will bring together clerics, scholars, and community representatives from across the nation.
The board will assess the political, social, economic, and educational rights of the Shia Muslim community while discussing how to convey what it regards as the authentic message of Islam based on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad and his family.
Several board members, including Maulana Zaheer Abbas, Maulana Jafar Abbas, Maulana Anwar Hussain Rizvi, Maulana Ejaz Athar, Maulana Intizam Haider, and Zaheer Mustafa, were present at the press conference.
