Arunachal Pradesh: Samay Raina’s reality show ‘India’s Got Latent’ is facing legal trouble after a contestant from Arunachal Pradesh, Jessy Nabam, made controversial comments about the people of her state. The issue has sparked outrage, leading to a First Information Report (FIR) being filed against her.
During a members-only episode of ‘India’s Got Latent,’ host Samay Raina asked Jessy Nabam if she had ever eaten dog meat.
In response, she said “People of Arunachal Pradesh eat dog meat even though I have never tasted it.”
She further added “I know because my friends eat it. They even eat their pets at times.”
Her comments left Samay Raina shocked.
Another panelist, Balraj Singh Ghai, reacted by saying“Now, you’re saying it for the sake of saying it.”
However, Jessy Nabam insisted that her statement was true. The episode also featured comedians Akash Gupta and Mallika Dua on the judges’ panel.
FIR Filed Against Jessy Nabam
Following the viral video of the episode, an FIR was registered against Jessy Nabam. The complaint, dated January 31, 2025, was filed at Itanagar Police Station, Arunachal Pradesh, by Armaan Ram Welly Bakha, a resident of Seppa, East Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh.
The FIR alleges that Jessy Nabam made derogatory remarks about the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh. The complaint urges strict action against her to prevent similar incidents in the future. The FIR states:
“I humble request you that please take quick action in this matter for in the future no one could do it again like Jessy Nabam did.”
Dog Meat Controversy in the North-East
The controversy also brings attention to the consumption of dog meat in North-Eastern states. While illegal in India, it has been reported that the practice still exists.
A PETA India investigation in October 2021 revealed that markets in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland were violating the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 by selling dog meat. The investigation found that captured dogs were being killed and sold for meat in markets such as Keera Bazaar in Dimapur and near Mao Market in Kohima, Nagaland.
According to Humane Society International, despite being illegal, thousands of dogs are killed every year for their meat in India.
With the FIR now in place, authorities may take further action against Jessy Nabam. The show’s producers and panelists have not yet commented on the controversy.
