The Academic Council of RGNUL has proposed removing ‘Rajiv Gandhi’ from the university’s name and renaming it as National Law University, Punjab. The final decision now awaits approval from the Executive Council.

The Academic Council of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab has started the process to change the name of the university to National Law University, Punjab. The proposal has been discussed at the Academic Council level and has now been forwarded to the Executive Council for final approval.
As per the official decision recorded by the Academic Council,
“The Academic Council considered the said recommendations in depth and after due deliberations, agreed with the proposal of the Dean (Academic) to change the name of the University from “Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab” to “National Law University, Punjab”. Further, recommended to the Executive Council for approval.”
The document carrying this decision has been signed by RGNUL Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) S Jai Shankar and Registrar Dr Ivneet Kaur Walia. This confirms that the proposal has formally moved ahead within the university’s administrative structure.
Speaking with Bar & Bench, Dr Walia verified the authenticity of the document and clarified that the proposal is still not final. She stated that the matter is currently pending before the Executive Council, which will take the final call on whether the name change will be approved.
The Academic Council of RGNUL consists of 12 members. It includes four faculty members of the university, along with the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, and other designated members. The Council plays a key role in academic and policy-related decisions within the institution.
If the Executive Council approves the recommendation, the university may officially be renamed as National Law University, Punjab. Such a move could bring it in line with the naming pattern followed by several other National Law Universities (NLUs) across India.
At present, the proposal is under consideration, and the final decision will depend on the Executive Council’s approval. The development has drawn attention within legal academic circles, as RGNUL is one of the prominent law universities in the country.
