NEW DELHI: Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has voiced his concern over the delay in justice for the Kolkata rape-murder case and urged the Supreme Court to expedite its judgement. In a recent interaction, Ganguly highlighted the importance of a timely and strong verdict that could set a precedent for future cases of such heinous crimes. He expressed his support for the ongoing movement in Kolkata, which has united people from various walks of life in their demand for justice.
The Supreme Court is expected to hear the RG Kar case again on September 17, after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was instructed to file an updated status report. The case, which has gripped the city of Kolkata and drawn attention across the nation, has brought about renewed calls for stricter action against those involved in such brutal crimes.
Ganguly, who remains a prominent figure both on and off the cricket field, had strong words regarding the urgency of the situation. While he acknowledged that legal processes typically take time, he made a heartfelt appeal for the judgement to be delivered at the earliest.
“I have not yet read the Supreme Court order issued today. However, like everyone who has participated in this movement passionately and non-politically, I want justice to be served. That is the most important thing. While court proceedings naturally take time, our request to the Supreme Court is to expedite their ruling in this case.”
-Ganguly told reporters.
He further emphasized that the verdict in this case should resonate beyond just the parties involved and serve as a global warning against such atrocious crimes. He hopes the ruling would not only bring justice to the victim and her family but also deter potential offenders in the future.
“The judgement should be an example to the entire world. Such that no person even thinks about committing a similar crime in the future. It is truly commendable how people have stood beside each other and I request the court to come up with their judgement as soon as possible,”
– he added.
As the case proceeds, there has also been a growing scrutiny of the role of law enforcement in the investigation, particularly the Kolkata Police. Following the Supreme Court’s latest hearing, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its demand for the resignation of Kolkata’s police commissioner, Vineet Goyal. The BJP alleges that the police failed to act promptly in the case and should be held accountable for any lapses in the investigation.
However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has responded by defending the police chief, citing the upcoming Durga Puja festival as a reason for delaying his potential resignation. Banerjee acknowledged that the police commissioner had offered to step down but stressed the importance of maintaining stability in law enforcement during the state’s most significant festival.
“The Kolkata Police Commissioner has approached me multiple times last week, offering his resignation.”
-Banerjee revealed.
“We have Pujo coming up. Someone knowledgeable about law and order needs to be present. If you can wait a few days, will it be such a big deal?”
-she added.
Banerjee’s response suggests that while the concerns around law enforcement are being taken seriously, she is also weighing the challenges posed by the massive scale of Durga Puja celebrations, which require a heightened focus on law and order.
The CBI has been tasked with investigating the case further, and its next status report, due on September 17, is eagerly awaited. The agency’s involvement came after public outrage over the initial handling of the case, with many accusing local authorities of inefficiency or worse. Now, all eyes are on the Supreme Court and the CBI as the legal process continues.
The ruling will likely shape the way law enforcement approaches such cases in the future and set a benchmark for how swiftly and effectively justice is delivered in instances of gender-based violence.
Citizens from all walks of life have united in demanding speedy justice, making this more than just a legal battle—it’s a social movement that transcends politics. People have come together in peaceful protests, candlelight marches, and public gatherings, all with one goal in mind: justice for the victim and her family.
Ganguly, whose voice carries immense weight in the public sphere, has also praised the people of Kolkata for their resilience and solidarity.
“It is truly commendable how people have stood beside each other,”
-he said, acknowledging the role of the collective effort in keeping the focus on the case.
