Rahul Gandhi Slammed Over Indian Army Remark | "They Can't Decide Who Is A True Indian": Priyanka Gandhi vs Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Monday expressed a strong concern over his December 2022 remarks on the Indian Army made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Although the Court stayed proceedings in a Lucknow court, it observed that such comments “would not come from a true Indian.” This comment ignited sharp reactions from across the political spectrum, most notably from Rahul Gandhi’s sister and senior Congress leader, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Addressing reporters outside the Parliament complex on Tuesday, Priyanka Gandhi took firm exception to the Supreme Court’s observation.

“With due respect to the honourable judges of the Supreme Court, they do not decide who is a true Indian,”

she said.

She further defended her brother, stating that he holds the Indian Army in the highest regard and would “never say anything against it.” In her view, Rahul Gandhi’s comments were misinterpreted and taken out of context.

Framing Rahul’s remarks as a part of democratic discourse rather than anti-national rhetoric, Priyanka added,

“It is the job of the opposition leader, his duty, to ask questions and challenge the government.”

The controversy stems from Rahul Gandhi’s statements made during the 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra, where he criticized the government’s handling of the Galwan Valley clash with China in 2020. His remarks were interpreted by some as disparaging the Army, a claim the Congress party has strongly denied.

While legal action was initiated in a lower court, the Supreme Court stayed the proceedings on August 1, 2025, even as it rebuked Rahul’s choice of words.

The ruling BJP seized the moment to attack Rahul Gandhi, branding him a “certified anti-national” and accusing him of trying to “strengthen China” by undermining India’s military and foreign policy standing.

In a scathing rebuttal, the Congress Party defended Rahul Gandhi and turned the spotlight back on the Modi government’s response to the 2020 Galwan clash. The party accused the government of adopting a “DDLJ policy” — Deny, Distract, Lie, Justify to avoid accountability on sensitive national issues.

The Congress also highlighted that patriotism includes the right to question, particularly when national interests are at stake.
