The Narendra Modi-led government has focused on recognising not just celebrities but also everyday heroes whose hard work often goes unnoticed. These include people from remote villages, tribal communities, and weaker sections of society.
“Ever since the Narendra Modi government came to power in 2014, it has started honouring the ‘unsung heroes’ by honouring them with the Padma awards, thus transforming Padma awards into ‘People’s Padma’.”
This year, 30 of the awardees were such “unsung heroes”.
The government has always emphasised that anyone from any background is eligible for a Padma Award, as long as they have done remarkable work.
“All persons without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex are eligible for these awards.”
To ensure fairness and diversity, special attention is given to people from disadvantaged communities.
“Concerted efforts are being made to identify talented persons whose excellence and achievements really deserve to be recognised from amongst women, weaker sections of the society, SCs & STs, divyang persons and who are doing selfless service to the society.”
The Padma Awards were started in 1954 and are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day. They are a symbol of the nation’s respect and gratitude for those who contribute towards the progress and development of India.
