The NEET-UG 2024 case saw several critical events unfold. The exam date announced and application forms were released, but technical issues sparked concerns among candidates. This led to numerous petitions and judicial involvement, resulting in delays to the examination schedule.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the pleas seeking the cancellation and re-test of the NEET-UG 2024 exam, ruling that there was no evidence of a systemic leak of question papers or other malpractices. Here is the timeline of events in the case:

July 23: The Supreme Court rules out the cancellation and re-test of the NEET-UG 2024 exam.

As per CJI D Y Chandrachud,

“There is an absence of material to conclude that the result of the NEET-UG 2024 exam is vitiated or there is a systemic breach,”

February 9, 2024: The National Testing Agency (NTA) issues a public notice for the online submission of application forms for NEET-UG 2024.

May 5: The NEET-UG 2024 exam is conducted at 4,750 centers in 571 cities, including 14 cities abroad.

May 17: The Supreme Court seeks responses from the Centre and NTA regarding a plea alleging irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 exam held on May 5.

June 4: Results for NEET-UG 2024 are declared, with 67 candidates achieving the top rank.

June 11: The Supreme Court, observing that the sanctity of NEET-UG 2024 may have been compromised, seeks responses from the Centre and NTA on a plea for holding a fresh examination due to alleged question paper leaks and other malpractices.

June 13: The Centre informs the Supreme Court that it has cancelled grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates who took the NEET-UG exam for admission to MBBS and other courses. These candidates will have the option to either retake the test or forgo the compensatory marks awarded for loss of time.

June 14: The Supreme Court seeks responses from the Centre and NTA on a plea for a CBI probe into allegations of a question paper leak and other irregularities in NEET-UG 2024.

June 18: The Supreme Court states that even minimal negligence in conducting the NEET-UG 2024 exam should be thoroughly investigated.

June 23: Officials report that 813 of the 1,563 candidates previously awarded grace marks in NEET-UG appear for a re-test.

July 1: The number of candidates sharing the top rank in the NEET-UG exam is reduced to 61 from 67 as the NTA announces revised results.

July 5: The Centre tells the Supreme Court that scrapping the NEET-UG 2024 exam entirely would “seriously jeopardize” many honest candidates and is not rational without proof of a large-scale breach of confidentiality.

July 5: The NTA informs the Supreme Court that cancelling NEET-UG 2024 would be significantly harmful to the public interest, particularly to the career prospects of those who cleared the exam.

July 10: The Centre tells the Supreme Court there was no indication of “mass malpractice” or a localized set of candidates benefiting leading to abnormal scores in NEET-UG 2024.

July 18: The Supreme Court directs the NTA to declare, by July 20 noon, the center and city-wise results of NEET-UG 2024 while masking the identities of the aspirants.

July 22: The Supreme Court asks the director of IIT-Delhi to form a team of three experts to review a specific Physics question from the NEET-UG 2024 exam and submit a report on the correct answer by the next day noon.
